How much are adoption fees and why are they that price?

Adoption fees vary by pet: cats range from $75 to $250, and dogs range from $150 to $450. Every adoptable pet is spayed or neutered, current on age-appropriate vaccinations, microchipped, screened for heartworms, and receiving current flea, tick, and heartworm prevention.

Those services alone can easily cost $430–$900 in Oklahoma. Adoption fees help supplement donations and support medical care, housing, food and other basic needs, utilities, and facility operations for every pet in HST’s care.

HST frequently runs adoption specials.

What’s included with adoption?

Each HST pet is spayed or neutered, has received age-appropriate vaccinations and eligible testing, is current on prevention, and has been microchipped with a Fi microchip that includes free lifetime registration.

A VCA Healthy Start Guarantee voucher, starter bag of food, and other adopter benefits are included from supporting partners.

HST staff and volunteers are available to answer questions, provide resources, and support you and your pet as you settle into your new home. Partner terms and eligibility may apply.

What is the process to adopt a pet?

HST’s adoption process is designed to be simple, transparent, and straightforward. Browse available pets online or visit them in person at the Adoption Center. Once you find a pet you are interested in, complete the digital application at home or in the Adoption Center.

Be prepared to provide your veterinarian’s information, if you have one, and your landlord’s information if you rent. Bringing a lease agreement that confirms pets are allowed can help speed up the process.

Applications submitted during operating hours are reviewed and answered the same day. Once approved to adopt, your new best friend will be ready to go home with you the same day. Contracts and adoption fees are collected digitally when you are on site and ready to adopt.

The first approved applicant on site, ready to take the pet home is granted the adoption. HST does not place adoption holds.

Do I need an appointment to meet adoptable pets?

No. The Adoption Center is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10:00am to 5:00pm without an appointment. Browse available pets and check current hours before traveling.

Where can I see the pets available right now?

Browse HST’s current dogs, cats, and other pets on the Available Pets page.

I found or see a stray. Can HST come and get it?

Humane Society of Tulsa is a private organization and does not have an Animal Control agreement with any government organization, so HST cannot pick up at-large animals. HST is also a managed-intake facility and often does not have the capacity to intake animals or process legal stray holds. Contact the appropriate Animal Control agency where the animal was found.

HST works closely with area shelters and Animal Control agencies and frequently performs rescue pulls from those shelters, so there is a strong chance the pet may eventually come into HST’s care.

I’ve lost my pet. What should I do?

Make lost-pet reports on neighborhood apps and groups such as Nextdoor, Ring, and neighborhood Facebook groups. Use Petco Love Lost to create a report and upload a current, clear photo of your pet. You can also use HST’s Lost & Found resource page to report or search for a pet and locate the correct Animal Control agency.

Most pets are found within a few blocks of home, so talk with neighbors and carefully search or drive the surrounding neighborhoods.

My pet is microchipped. How do I track it?

Microchips are not tracking devices. A microchip is a tiny chip, slightly larger than a grain of rice, placed just under the skin—usually between the shoulder blades. It emits a radio signal containing a unique number that can be read with a scanner. That number connects to a database containing your contact information and information about your pet.

The microchip itself does not send a GPS location. It is, however, vital for proving ownership and creating a permanent connection between you and your pet. Keep the registration current so a shelter or veterinary clinic can contact you when the chip is scanned.

For real-time tracking, a separate GPS device uses satellites and cellular service and must remain attached, charged, and activated. HST’s partner Fi offers these services.

Do you provide medical care for owned pets?

We do. HST Veterinary Clinic Services is a full-service, low-cost veterinary clinic that can assist with most medical needs and services for owned pets. HST also holds mobile spay/neuter and vaccine clinics throughout the year in neighborhoods across Tulsa and beyond. Review current services and pricing or request an appointment through the approved booking page.

I need to surrender my pet. What is the process?

When the difficult decision to surrender a family member comes up, HST is here to help. HST offers resources intended to help keep pets with their families whenever possible; start with the pet-family support resources.

If surrender is the last available option, complete the appropriate HST intake application: dog surrender application or cat surrender application.

HST is a managed-intake facility and does not euthanize pets due to time limits or space, so kennel space is limited. Applications are processed in the order received based on available kennels. Once space becomes available and an application is approved, HST will schedule an intake date and time for the pet.

What help is available if I am struggling to care for my pet?

The Stay Together Program may offer pet food and supplies, emergency boarding, low-cost veterinary care, and other support or referrals based on current resources and eligibility. Review the program and request the assistance you need.

Do you accept donations? What kind?

Absolutely. As a private 501(c)(3) nonprofit rescue, HST depends on generous community support. In addition to financial donations, HST accepts in-kind donations such as blankets, towels, cleaning supplies, pet products, and other currently needed items.

In-kind donations can be dropped off at the Adoption Center at 6232 East 60th Street, Tulsa, OK 74135, Monday through Saturday from 10:00am–5:00pm. Financial donations can be made online or mailed to 10145 Riverside Pkwy, #542, Tulsa, OK 74137. You can also review HST’s current wishlist and other giving options.

HST’s EIN is 73-1571476.

How old do I need to be to volunteer?

Independent volunteers must be at least 18. Young people ages 10–17 may volunteer with a parent who is also an approved HST volunteer.

I need to report suspected abuse of an animal. Who do I contact?

Report suspected animal abuse or neglect to the local Animal Control officers and/or law-enforcement agency with jurisdiction. Call 911 when there is an immediate threat to people or animals.

Please exercise caution and obey all laws. Entering private property, even with good intentions, can be considered trespassing. Removing an animal from private property without the owner’s consent, even in dire circumstances, can be considered theft of private property. Reporting suspected crimes to law enforcement is the safest and legal way to help get the animal to safety.

I found injured or abandoned wildlife. What should I do?

Do not attempt to handle or collect wild animals. Even wildlife that appears docile can bite, scratch, or spread diseases that can be contracted by humans. Only trained professionals should handle wildlife.

Make a report to the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation. Find the appropriate game warden in the official directory.

Where are you located and when are you open?

The Adoption Center is located at 6232 East 60th Street, Tulsa, OK 74135, just north of 61st Street on Sheridan Road. It is open to the public Monday through Saturday from 10:00am–5:00pm.
